Extremism in the news

Almost on cue, the nation is shocked by the violence of extremists and homegrown terrorism.

First, the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller by (presumably) a religious extremist who showed how pro-life he truly is. Both sides of this debate are scrambling to frame the incident.

Second, the gunning down of a military recruiter by (presumably) an anti-war extremist who declared war on an Arkansas recruiting center. Unlike the abortion case, there’s no debate over our nation’s wars left to frame, especially since Obama entered the White House.

To Protect and Serve

Carlos Miller shares a chilling video today of an off-duty police officer bragging, very drunkenly, about his latest murder to a laughing, receptive audience at a bar.

Recently, Miller provided a 24 hour glimpse into police misconduct, highlighting the work of the “Injustice in Seattle” Twitter feed and struck a real nerve that brought in many comments from all sides. Personally, I think “Misconduct” is such a soft term for (in this case) child molesters and murderers.
