China’s Orwellian Olympics
August 8, 2008 @ 9:10 am by Noble LieTo me, the best way to protest something is not to participate. I will not watch a second of the Olympic games. Truth be told, I wouldn’t anyway, because it doesn’t interest me in the slightest. I don’t plan to obsess over this China issue, but after yesterday’s write-up, I found a very good article on “security” in China. For the games, this includes:
- 300,000 cameras
- Every cab has a remote control microphone, GPS and lo-jack
- Remote control microphones in hotels and offices
- Ability to tap any phone, land or cellular
- Ability to hack any laptop, cell phone, PDA and perhaps digital camera
- A force of 600,000 “national security volunteers” (sort of like Obama called for) to snoop and report suspicious behavior
- Dissidents and protestors rounded up and detained before the games begin
I agree that, in a way, this is an experiment to see what the public reaction will be. It could be the stage for a world-engulfing psychodrama, too, but with this kind of security, I think we will know exactly whom to blame if that does happen.
