You’ve got to humanize yourself

I work all day at the factory
I’m building a machine that’s not for me
There must be a reason that I can’t see
You’ve got to humanize yourself

A policeman put on his uniform
He’d like to have a gun just to keep him warm
Because violence here is a social norm
You’ve got to humanize yourself

The Police, “Rehumanize Yourself”

If you are reading this, that is an amazing thing. You have a brain capable of turning these abstract symbols (I almost used the word random but I’m starting to learn in my linguistics studies that there is nothing random about language construction) into KNOWLEDGE.

We are also a delicate creature, social by nature, and we need the support of each other to thrive and flourish. This natural human instinct to help and support those immediately around us has been monetized and turned into a commodity for sale.

I know I’m rambling, but the point here is, we have to stand up for each other. Injustice against one IS injustice against all. Only by reaffirming each other’s humanity can we begin to have the dignity to rise up from this commercial dependency, this need for government and social services to professionally provide services that people used to spend their lives providing for each other.

To fight a power yet continue to depend on that power for your survival is suicide. I’m not talking about armed revolution, or even using the system to fight the system. I’m talking about breaking the bonds in our minds.

The dirty little secret is that we do consent to be governed. All the atrocities we see going on in our world are commited by people like you and me, and we are capable of the same atrocities. We may not want to admit it, but we are.

The war between Heaven and Hell (or whatever titles you choose) is not some far-off otherworldly epic battle. It is waged within each one of us, between our higher and our lower drives. We project our view of the world onto the world around us. Our actions deeply effect one another. Because of this your world will ripple out and effect other people’s worlds, who will then ripple those effects onto others. How we treat ourselves foremost, how we treat each other, how we decide to carry out the business of survival, how we agree to live and exist together.. these things are the difference between Heaven and Hell.

There is another amazing thing about humanity. While it’s true that you can turn them into animals by treating them like one, it is also true that if you treat them with dignity, love them, nurture them, expect them to be capable of anything, they will rise triumphantly to their fullest potential.
